Planning a schedule for freshman year can be quite an intimidating process. Hopefully this blog post will help students and parents through the process. Registration sheets are due by Friday, February 13th to the student's grade school main office.
The front side of the registration sheet is the demographic portion. It is important that it be filled out completely since the information will be entered into the computer system.
A copy of the curriculum guide can be found as a link on the right side of this blog page. It lists all of the classes and gives a description of each. Each 8th grader who attended the visit day at IVC was given a paper copy of the guide.
The back side of the registration is critical in figuring out a schedule for each student.
- Each student needs to make 16 choices. That is why each student should have written a 16 at the top of the paper.
- The classes in the first section are required classes. All students should check those 8 spots. They can put a star under Accelerated if they would like an accelerated class in that area.
- The second section of electives are full year classes. That is why there are two spots in front of each. The only exception is Math Lab. Math Lab is designed to give students extra help with Algebra. It is designed for students who might need that extra help because he or she struggles with Algebra. A student may select only one semester of Math Lab.
- Foreign Language - It is important that students who plan to go on to college take a foreign language. Most colleges require two years of a foreign language.
- The third section is a listing of classes that only last one semester. A description of each can be found in the curriculum guide.
- NEW CLASS: Intro to Computer Science We are very excited to be offering the first in a series of Project Lead the Way computer classes. This class is designed for students who have an interest in computers. A second and third PLTW class will be added over the next two years. Interested students should write in Intro to Computer Science above Keyboarding and check that class.
- When completed, students should have 16 check marks in the 3 sections. Any stars under the Accelerated heading do not count as a check mark. The star just means they want that class as accelerated.
- Alternate Classes: It is important that students list at least two alternate classes. In the event that a class is unavailable, the counselors will automatically replace it with an alternate choice.
