Suspension on MAP Grants this Thursday

Only 54 IVC seniors have filled out their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Any seniors who have not completed their FAFSA are encouraged to do so before this Thursday. Below is the communication sent out by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC).

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) is suspending the announcement of 2016-17 Monetary Award Program (MAP) grants for applicants whose initial 2016-17 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) is received by the Central Processing System (CPS) on or after Thursday, March 10, 2016.

Each year, once projections indicate that the demand is close to exceeding the anticipated availability of limited MAP dollars, ISAC suspends award announcements. We are making you aware of the suspension of 2016-17 MAP award announcements to assist you as you counsel your college-bound seniors regarding financial assistance that may be available to them for the 2016-17 academic year.

High school seniors who plan to be enrolled in college for the 2016-17 academic year, but do not submit a FAFSA prior to March 10, should still be encouraged to do so as soon as possible at FAFSA on the Web. Every year there are students who do not use their MAP awards and, if appropriated dollars remain after all eligible recipients who completed the FAFSA prior to March 10 have received their awards, those who file on or after March 10and meet the MAP eligibility requirements may have an opportunity to receive those unused awards. If this occurs, eligible students who complete their FAFSAs earliest will receive first consideration.

FAFSA results are used to determine eligibility for other forms of federal, state and institutional financial assistance. The suspension of 2016-17 MAP award announcements does not impact any other financial aid programs.

In addition, encourage your college-bound students (and their families) to visit the Students & Parents area at isac.org for information regarding the financial aid process.
