Earning College Credit While at IVC

There are two different ways a student can earn college credits while still in high school.  It is a great way to save some money and get a jump start on a college career.  Dual credit classes and taking a part time schedule at ICC give students the opportunity to earn more than one semester of college credit.  Imagine starting college with one semester already completed.

Here is how it works...

Dual Credit Classes: Dual credit classes are classes taught here at IVC by IVC teachers using college curriculum.  IVC currently offers three dual credit classes: Writing for College, Intro to Business, and Marketing.

Part-time ICC Schedule: During senior year, students are given the opportunity to take a partial schedule at IVC and a partial schedule at ICC.  The grades earned at ICC will transfer back to IVC if the student needs the credit for graduation.  Students are allowed to miss two periods at IVC for every one class they take at ICC.  They can take up to 2 ICC classes (roughly 6 credit hours) each semester during senior year if approved by the Principal.

Students should see their counselor if interested.

So here is a possible scenario...

Student A takes...

  • Writing for College (3 hours earned)
  • Marketing (3 hours earned)
  • Intro to Business (3 hours)
  • two classes during fall of senior year (6 hours earned)
  • two classes during spring of senior year (6 hours)
Student A will finish high school in May with 21 hours of college credit earned.  A typical college semester is roughly 15 hours.
